Self-Care February Day 21: Improve your mind-body connection

You may be wondering why the chakras are so important. They are energy centres located throughout your body which have a direct influence on your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. When the energy is flowing freely, you feel happy and filled with energy. When there are blocks in any of the chakras, corresponding problems arise. 

There are seven main chakras, each with their own unique associations: the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. Working with each of these chakras can help you to achieve balance in your life because each represents a unique area of your experiences. This is an ongoing process – the only constant in life is change, so while blocks may occur, they can be removed and vice versa in a continual circle. 

Start simply. Sit quietly and close your eyes. Turn your attention to your breath and when you feel ready, send that breath down to your red root chakra at the base of your spine. You might like to put your hands at the base of your spine to deepen the connection. See how it feels when you send your breath there. Observe without judgement and if you sense any blocks, breathe them away. 

Then pull that energy up to the orange sacral chakra just below your navel. Send your breath there to remove any blocks. 

Continue this process with your yellow solar plexus chakra just below your ribs, your green heart chakra at your heart, your blue throat chakra at your throat, your indigo third eye chakra in the middle of your forehead and your white crown chakra at the top of your head. You might like to sit for a moment, enjoy a few cycles of energy through all your chakras, starting at the root and going all the way up to your crown, overflowing and then going back to the root again.

How do you feel now that you’ve finished?

Traditionally, the chakras are the centres which allow your life force to flow through your mind-body system which is then converted into mental, physical and emotional experiences. If you noticed any blocks when you were doing the above exercise, the chances are that you are also experiencing blocks in that aspect of your life. Doing this exercise on a regular basis helps you to map your energy flow so you know where you need to do more work or where you have strengths you can build upon. 

All of this enables you to become more self-aware and better connected to all aspects of your. being. The clearer your chakras the more you are living in harmony with yourself and the world. This allows you to live in a perfect state of flow, moving in alignment with yourself and the Universe.
