Surviving The Retrograde

How to make the retrograde work for you rather than against you

“Oh no. Mercury’s in retrograde!”

It seems like Mercury’s always in retrograde and when it is, everyone dreads what’s going to go wrong this time.

The fastest planet in the solar system, Mercury is associated with technology, logic and communications, amongst other things. So when it goes into retrograde, it appears to be going backwards – and it causes all sorts of technological hiccups when it does.

Right now, a whopping six planets are in retrograde – Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. This is set to last until 2 October, so if you’re finding yourself questioning your life, feeling more introspective or going through some upheavals, that’ll be why.

The things is that retrogrades don’t have to be something to be feared. In fact, they can be incredibly positive if you view them in the right way.

So, for example, I posted on Facebook the other day about the fact that so far during this Mercury retrograde, my car’s gearbox has failed, the TV has decided to be dim for half the screen and I spilt water all over my laptop. The latter is the most devastating, since I need it to work and it wouldn’t switch on.

One person commented to ask what I’d done in a past life to invite such karmic retribution!

The thing is, I don’t see any of these things as being karmic. Just frustrating and potentially expensive. Yes, I can do without spending money on all those things, but it’s not the end of the world if I do.

So I could get upset about all these technological fails, or I could do what I’ve actually done:

  • Take this opportunity to see if we can function as a single car household, which will save us a lot of money. So far, so not-too-bad.
  • Watch less TV. And if there is something I really must watch (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK anyone?!), I still have a tablet or phone to access it. Hardly the end of the world.
  • Take stock of my hardware. I’ve recognised that being dependent on a single laptop is unsustainable for my business, so I’ve invested in an iMac as well, which is opening up whole new worlds of possibilities. (And gives me another big screen to watch TV on!)

While all these little setbacks could be seen as frustrating, in fact, they’ve all given me opportunities to see if I could be doing things differently. It’s made me ask can I do things better? And in some instances, yes, I can.

Last week was the Autumn Equinox, a good time to get things into balance and clear house where necessary. Combine that with all the retrogrades and now really is the perfect time to take a long, hard look at your life and think about whether you’re holding on to anything which no longer serves you, whether that be equipment, people, relationships, possessions, habits, or mindsets. Clear space for the new and improved life you deserve. Make it easy for the Universe to bless you with all the good things by giving it room to work its magic.

Let the retrograde work for you, rather than against you.
