Take Your Gratitude For A Walk

January Meditation Challenge Day 16: Gratitude Walk

If you’ve been following along with the challenge, you’ll know the importance of gratitude. (And if not, go and check out days two and nine!)

Another way of working with gratitude is to go on a gratitude walk. There are a variety of different ways you can do this:

  • List out something you are grateful for with every step.
  • Look around you and find something you’re grateful for in your surroundings. 
  • Tune in to each of your senses in turn and be grateful for the experience each of them gives you. 
  • Repeat the mantra “I am grateful” in your mind with every step. 
  • You can simply allow the feeling of gratitude to wash over you anew with each step. 

Feel free to use your imagination to expand on any of these ideas. The main thing is that you be fully present in the feeling of gratitude. 

You might find that you struggle initially to come up with a list of things to be grateful for so you could choose just a handful of items and cycle through them. You might find it helpful to give yourself a category of things you’re going to be grateful for, such as your body and health or the people in your life. The more you practice gratitude, the easier it will become to think of more and more things to add to your list. 

You don’t have to be grateful for your entire walk either – you might like to start small with a couple of minutes and gradually expand it until you find you are easily capable of walking for twenty minutes and have something new to be thankful for with every single step. 

You can do a gratitude walk anywhere – for example, you could do a gratitude walk when you leave your desk to go get a drink or you could walk around your kitchen while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. If you go outside, you have the added bonus of getting some fresh air – and that can be the first thing you’re grateful for!
